2022 CTE CyberNet Academy - South Dakota

In 2020, Dakota State University was one of three schools to offer the inaugural CTE CyberNet Academy. The three institutions included Dakota State University (Madison, SD), San Antonio College (San Antonio, TX), and Moraine Valley Community College (Chicago, IL). These three institutions trained over 30 teachers in cybersecurity and helped them to integrate material in their classroom.

Funding sources have allowed for a 2022 CTE CyberNet Academy. Besides the three original schools, two other institutions have been added. The two new schools include Eastern New Mexico University (Ruidoso, NM) and Florida International University (Miami, FL).

DSU is excited to offer this training and curriculum to 10 South Dakota High School Computer teachers. The Academy consists of two parts. These part include the Intensive and the Accelerator

Intensive - The Intensive is an 80 hour professional development opportunity in which 40 hours will be completed online and 40 hours will be completed Face-to-Face at DSU. The face-to-face will come first. Dates have not been decided but options for the dates are indicated within the registration. This workshop will help fill in academic gaps of teachers as well as provide them with a cybersecurity curriculum designed for 9th and 10th graders. The 40 hour online will focus on reviewing the curriculum and building an action plan to integrate into current courses or to start a new cybersecurity course.

Accelerator - The accelerator program is designed to help teachers integrate and incorporate cybersecurity into their classroom. Unlike other professional development where you go to the workshop and that is it, the CyberNET Academy team will serve as mentors to help you in learning more as well as integrating curriculum into your classroom. The work of the mentors will include and is not limited to:
  • Each participant will be assigned a mentor (DSU Cybersecurity Faculty Member) to help guide them with curriculum.
  • Mentors will visit and present other cybersecurity topics to the participants classroom
  • Mentors will help establish relationships between industry and K12 classrooms
  • Mentors will hold online meetups with academy participants to create a professional community and share ideas.
